Churchill Downs was named after relatives of the founder, Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., grandson of William Clark of Lewis and Clark Expedition fame.
Oft referred to as “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” only two Kentucky Derby® winning horses have broken the two minute mark – Monarchos in 2001 and Secretariat in 1973.
From the “ahead of it’s time department”, in 1915, Regret became the first female horse to win the Kentucky Derby. Females are eligible to participate in the Kentucky Derby, but males are not able to enter the Kentucky Oaks.
